The Vancrancy of Chance

on Tue, 07/14/2015 - 12:22

The famous Canadian tenor, Jon Vickers died this past week and as such, stories about his life have been popping up in the various media. This most recent one by the Globe and Mail national reporter, Tu Thanh Ha really highlights the role that chance plays in our lives. Both a relief and a curse, chance brought us Jon Vickers the Opera Star versus Jon Vickers the Truck Driver or even, Jon Vickers the Physician.

Sharing our Stories

Some of you know this already, but I guess I am officially outing myself on now:  for the past year or so, I have taken my long-standing interest in how people tick and have used that to embark on an exploration of the medical field.  As part of that interest, I have maintained a subscription to an American based medical blog called Kevin MD, which recently published a piece by Mark Vonnegut, the son of the late American author Kurt Vonnegut.

I knew from my pastime reading of Vonnegut senior's autobio (A Man Without a Country) that his son was a physician.

Sometimes harder *is* better

That title is more than just an apt summary of my life this past year (boom-boom ching), it also encapsulates the essense of a video that just stumbled across my desktop this evening.

This insightful video was produced by Dr. Mike Evans, founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital (I may have mostly lifted that last line directly from the video....)

Anyhow, should you also enjoy it, you can subscribe to his Youtube

Less Than 1 Week To Go!

on Sun, 11/23/2014 - 18:42

Our excursion into the wilderness happens less than a week from today - Saturday November 29th at 7:30 pm!

As some of you already know,  many of our regular baroque orchestral collaborators are on tour with the Taflemusik orchestra, so we will be performing at concert pitch A440!  I will be singing the part of the Second Israelite woman, which is an interesting outing for me. C.P.E. didn't see fit to include an alto soloist in this piece, so I will be masquerading as a soprano!  Please come cheer me on - shouts of applause for anything over 784Hz (high G) would be greatly appreciated! ;)
